City of Lahti

Lahti, Finland, will been the orchestra’s home years 2019-2023.

Lahti is a city of 120,000 residents and a center for a region of 200,000 people. Lahti is the eight biggest city and the fifth biggest region in Finland. It is known for its great events, beautiful nature and home of the world known The Lahti Symphony Orchestra. Lahti can provide a great place for young musicians to play music, perform and enjoy Finnish culture at the same time. Sibelius Hall and Lahti Concert Hall, located in Lahti, are great facilities for the Orkester Norden to be based on for few years to come.

Changing hosts is part of Orkester Norden’s overall objective to strengthen cooperation between the Nordic and Baltic countries.

In 1993, Orkester Norden was founded under Artistic Director Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Rigskonserter in Stockholm, Sweden, handled the administrative work.

In 2008, a new artistic director, Rolf Gupta, took over, and moved the orchestra’s base to Kristiansand, Norway, where it remained until 2013.

Years 2014-2018 Aalborg, Denmark has been hosting the orchestra.
